Mrs. Johnston's
3rd Grade

Third grade at WCA is a dynamic and engaging year full of fun, learning, and memorable activities.

Academic Skills:
Students begin by mastering cursive writing and strengthening their math skills, including long division, rounding, and solving two-step word problems. They also learn their multiplication tables (0–12), and each time they pass a test, they earn a banana split party as a fun reward.

Social Studies:
The year brings history to life as students study the Vikings and Ancient Rome. To deepen their understanding, they dress up in themed costumes such as Viking outfits and togas.

Science:
Hands-on experiments allow students to explore fascinating topics like the human body, lights and optics, sound, and ecology. They also engage in exciting dissections, including owl pellets and cow eyes, to learn about anatomy firsthand.

Community Service and Field Trips:
Third graders participate in community service by delivering gifts to the food bank and visiting a local donut shop. Field trips to places like the pumpkin patch, the Kansas Learning Center for Health, the Mid-American All Indian Center, and the zoo or Tanganyika provide enriching experiences beyond the classroom.

Classroom Life:
Throughout the year, students care for desk pets, fostering responsibility and fun. One of the most heartwarming traditions is the Valentine’s Day visit to a local nursing home, where students deliver roses to residents to spread joy and kindness.

Overall, third grade at WCA offers a well-rounded year full of hands-on learning, creativity, and meaningful experiences.
