The 4th annual Governor’s Achievement Awards, honoring top performing schools in the state were recently announced.  Forty-three elementary schools, eleven middle/junior high schools, and eighteen high schools qualified for this prestigious award.

This is awarded to the top 5% of elementary schools in the state of Kansas
WCA received the

  2008 - 2009
 2006 - 2007 
 

The specifications for receiving this award are as follows:
     • The school must have achieved the Standard of Excellence in both reading and mathematics for 2011.
     • The school must have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in reading, mathematics and attendance in 2011.
     • The school must have been among schools in the top 5% in both reading and mathematics on the 2011 state assessments at its respective level.
Public and private schools accredited with the Kansas State Board of Education are considered for this award.

WCA fourth graders participated in the Math Bowl at Lincoln Elementary.  Out of the top three places of the day, Braden earned first place, and Devin earned third place.  
The top twelve students from each group were awarded prizes.  In their group Braden and Devin received first and third places.  Isabella received the first place honor and Kaylene earned second place in their group. In her group Dené received a 6th place award. 

The Electronic Publishing Industry Coalition (EPIC) announced that a poem written by Julia won Judges Award in EPIC’s Middle School division Poetry Category.  Her poem entitled My World was included in their 2010 New Voices Young Writers™ anthology.

Mrs. Mitchell encourages her middle school writers to enter writing contests as a way to hone their craft.  She posts contest information on her MS Wikispace

Text Box: On Monday, September 26th Wellington Christian Academy held its annual spelling bee.  Jacob (left) and Braden (right) will represent WCA in the Sumner County Spelling Bee which will be held on Wednesday, October 12th in Conway Springs.
Text Box: Mrs. Bassford’s 4th grade class did a great job at the Math Bowl!  It was held December 14th at Lincoln School.  124 students from Wellington’s 4th grade classes competed.   Overall awards went to Hanna and Chloe who tied for first place.  Draecon got third place overall.  Avery and Emberly received firsts in their groups.  Karsten received a second in his group.  In addition to doing so well everyone had a lot of fun!

Text Box: Bliss’s story “Climbing the Snow King” was published in the book, A Trip to Remember.  Bliss joins Katie, Olivia, and Heaven as WCA students who have all had their stories submitted by Mrs. Mitchell and  published in Benchmark Education books.
